Abstract :

The UK in recent times has attracted many international postgraduate students. This could be attributed to the UK’s higher educational standards, the two-year post-study labour programme for international graduates, or a real desire to study and acquire enhanced academic experiences, as well as secure excellent employment outcomes after studies. These are the expectations, but what are the realities? The recent White Paper and Home Office immigration policy modifications aim to restrict the number of overseas immigrants, which has doubled the planned targets and necessitated tougher visa control. This move does not only mirror a substantial change in the social world of international students who have completed their studies but also impacts their health, eligibility, identity rights, and mobility in the UK. This paper explores the lived realities of these Nigerian students postgraduation, including the challenges in adapting to the new culture, integrating into the UK workforce, and the ongoing changes in immigration policy. Using qualitative methods, the study aims to understand their experiences, challenges, and coping strategies employed during post-study. This doctoral study will also challenge the Western positivist epistemologies by valuing various worldviews and supporting knowledge co-creation. To achieve this, the study will cross through different fields of discipline, such as law, sociology, health, human resources, and education, to understand how these different fields shape their experiences.
